Becoming a Child Support Lawyer

This professional is dedicated to ensuring that the minor children of those that are involved in custody, divorce, or guardianship negotiations are treated justifiably. They also make sure that the minor children's best interest is represented. 

A child support lawyer may work with a child advocacy group or the court systems to collect child support money, and negotiate custody arrangements like visitation rights and the terms of the custody agreement. They may also advise on other issues, such as:

• Establishing trust funds
• Set up powers of attorney to facilitate negotiations
• Validate the provisions of estate settlements and terms of a will
• Establishing wills and annuities that will benefit the minor children
• In paternity issues they may be involved to determine who has the legal responsibility for child support
• Matters involving adoption, emancipation of minors, and surrogacy

A child support lawyer may also be consulted if the terms of guardianship need to be altered.

To become a child support lawyer will need to complete high school and then has at least seven more years of post-high school education. This will break down to getting your bachelor's degree and three years in law school. Once you pass law school, you have to take a law exam to get your license to be able to practice law. It is advisable that you have good communication, writing, and comprehension skills.

When getting your bachelor's degree some choose a law-related undergraduate or pre-law major but you can earn your bachelor's degree in any major and still be admitted to law school. 

You could get your degree in political science, English, economics, or even history or business. Before you are admitted to law school most will take a standardized exam. The exam does not measure your knowledge of the law but it measures your ability to analyze problems and comprehend complex reading materials. 

They also evaluate your ability to apply logic to problem solving and arguments.

Once you are admitted to law school you will take many legal courses, including those related to family law. In any legal courses, you need to do particularly well. 

While going to law school, may students will work as an intern or clerk for organizations and firms that specialize in family law, in which child support law is a part of. This will give you valuable experience you can utilize after you graduate.

Once you have passed law school and got your license you can start your own practice or go to work for a law firm that handles family law or child support cases. 

Most will choose to work for a firm in order to get more experience before they branch out on their own.
